Chenin Blanc 2010 Chart

2015 Chenin Blanc

Appellation: Clarksburg

Vineyard: The grapes come from Merwin Vineyards in Clarksburg. The vineyard borders along the Sacramento River Deep Water Channel which provides cooling breezes, warm summer days and cool nights resulting in a long dry growing season. The grapes were hand-picked from a low yielding portion of the vineyard. The Clarksburg Appellation is about 16 miles long and 8 miles wide with about 10,000 acres of vineyards planted in poorly drained clay and loam soils.

Vintage: Although fairly significant rainfall during December of 2015 helped to ease some of the drought concerns, January had almost no rain. February had about 3 inches but still below average and March only about a 1/3 of an inch. Some rain in April helped with the dry soil as did cool mornings and fog. The result was a longer bloom period and reduced berry set leading to smaller cluster size. Most of the growing season was characterized by typical warm days accompanied by cool nights resulting in an excellent growing season. Harvest was just about a week earlier than 2014 with very good quality grapes.

Composition: 100% Chenin Blanc

Vinification: The grapes in this wine were harvested just before dawn while the air was cool. The grapes went straight to press and then transferred to stainless steel tanks where it settled before being racked and then inoculated for fermentation with a yeast isolated in South Africa. After fermentation was complete, the wine was racked again and held in stainless steel until bottled the following April.

Tasting Notes: This wine shows aromas of peaches, melon and pear along with honeysuckle and hints of pineapple and citrus. It is crisp, clean and fruity on the palate with a medium body, mineral overtones and bright acidity, along with flavors of white peach and grapefruit, as well as a bit of lime and pineapple. Wonderful summer-time wine just by itself or serve with salt-cured meats such as prosciutto, soft rich slightly robust cheeses such as camembert or goat cheeses, a rich soufflé, simple fish dishes or a bowl of steamed mussels.
