2013 Sangiovese

Appellation: Lodi

Vineyard: Arbor Vineyards –The Vineyard is located in the Lodi Appelation along Harney Road. Located directly east of San Francisco and south of Sacramento at the edge of the Sacramento River Delta, the Lodi appellation is noted for its classic Mediterranean climate and its distinctive sandy soils. As temperatures rise in the central valley, cool maritime breezes are pulled directly across the Lodi region creating a climate that has allowed premium wine grapes to flourish. The dry warm summer days allow Lodi grapes to develop full ripe fruit flavors while the breezes maintain the natural acidity for structure and complexity in the finished wines. The vines are approximately 15 years old. Arbor Vineyards subscribes to the Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing.

Vintage: 2013 was another excellent growing year in Lodi. In general conditions were almost ideal. While spring conditions were warm, summer saw relatively moderate temperatures creating conditions for great quality wines. Overall grape yields were normal to somewhat larger than normal.

Composition: 100% Sangiovese

Vinification:Grapes were hand sorted, de-stemmed and transferred to 1 ton open bins where it cold-soaked for about 48 hours before it underwent primary fermentation. The must was punched down by hand 2-3 times a day.  The wine was aged, with minimal racking, in a mixture of mostly neutral French and American oak barrels for about 18 months.

Tasting Notes: Medium red/garnet in color, this Sangiovese has aromas of cherries and raspberries with hints of mint, rose petals and a bit of leather and oregano.  Fresh slightly tart cherries, raspberry and red plum fruit on the palate with bright acidity along with moderate tannins balance this wine, making it a great food partner.  Try with a margharita pizza, pasta dishes with a rich tomato, Bolognese or cream sauce or a perfectly grilled steak.
