Chenin Blanc 2010 Chart

2015 Vin Rose

Appellation: Clements Hills, Lodi

Vineyard: Jose Morales Vineyard (formerly Bokides Ranch) –The Vineyard lies within the Clement Hills AVA which is located within the SE corner of the Lodi appellation. Clements Hills is characterized by rolling hills that emerge out of the San Joaquin Valley to form the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Clements Hills is distinguished by having different soils (loam and clay on top of granite and volcanic) with less vigor and is generally warmer with cooler nights and more rainfall than the West side of Lodi. The vines are approximately 15 years old and trellised.

Vintage: Although fairly significant rainfall during December of 2015 helped to ease some of the drought concerns, January had almost no rain. February had about 2 inches but still below average and March only about a ¼ of an inch. Some rain in April helped with the dry soil as did cool mornings and fog. The result was a longer bloom period and reduced berry set leading to smaller cluster size. Most of the growing season was characterized by warm days accompanied by cool nights. There were only 9 days above 100 degrees in 2015 in Lodi compared to 5 days in 2014 with average highs hovering around 90 degrees during June through September for both 2014 and 2015. Harvest again began a little on the early side and continued at a fairly rapid pace finishing up before the end of September. The 2015 yield was a little lower than the previous few years with very good quality grapes.

Composition: 100% Grenache

Vinification: These grapes were harvested separately at lower sugar levels from the rest of the Grenache solely for the purpose of making rose. The grapes were hand sorted, de-stemmed and transferred to bins where it cold-soaked for several hours until optimal color was achieved. The must was then pressed and transferred to stainless steel tanks where it settled before being racked and then inoculated for fermentation with a yeast isolate from the Cornas area in the Northern Rhone. After fermentation, the wine was racked again and held in stainless steel until bottled the following April.

Tasting Notes: Coral pink in color, this wine exhibits fresh strawberry aromas along with a bit of pink grapefruit and a touch of cinnamon. It is light and fresh on the palate with strawberry and raspberry flavors along with pink grapefruit, nice acidity and a hint of earthiness. It is delicious on its own especially on warm sunny days or perfect with a plate of charcuterie, goat cheese or summer tomatoes.
