Appellation: Solano County Green Valley
Vineyard: The Zinfandel comes from the Wirth Ranch. The Wirth Ranch Vineyard which is dry farmed and approximately 80 old years is situated on a Southeast facing slope located along Green Valley Road just off San Pablo Bay. Solano County Green Valley Appellation has a maritime climate characterized by cool, moist winds blowing inland from the ocean and bay. Fog is also a factor in this area producing daily temperature fluctuations that are excellent to maintain good acidity in quality wines. The soils are described as very deep and well drained, on alluvial fans and stream terraces. Green Valley is approximately one mile wide and four miles long and has about 800 acres under vine.
Vintage: 2012 was an excellent growing year in Solano County. In general conditions were almost ideal with a mild spring producing good fruit set. This was followed by a fairly long, warm summer with no rain and a couple of heat waves in September and October. This allowed grapes to ripen more gradually resulting in excellent quality throughout the region. Overall grape yields were normal to somewhat larger than normal.
Composition: 88% Zinfandel, 7% Syrah, 5% Carignane
Vinification: Grapes were hand sorted, de-stemmed and transferred to 1 ton open bins where it cold-soaked for about 48 hours before it underwent primary fermentation. The must was punched down by hand 2-3 times a day. The wine was aged, with minimal racking, in a mixture of mostly neutral French and American oak barrels for about 18 months.
Tasting Notes: The intensity of the old vine flavors shine through in this zesty Zinfandel. Eucalyptus and raspberry along with some minerality and hints of dried marjoram and thyme come through on the nose. On the palate mint, a bit of chocolate, fresh raspberries and blackberries combine with the herbs and a touch of cinnamon. A lingering medium bodied mouth feel and good acid balances this wine. Excellent with BBQ meats or poultry as well as hearty stews or chili. Dry aged cheeses pair nicely as email@example.com
