Bob grew up in Ohio and moved to San Francisco with his wife in 1981 after graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Accounting. He started out in public accounting and then on to various accounting and finance positions in banking, real estate, manufacturing and financial services. Having been exposed to wine early in his life as a result of his father’s interest in collecting fine European and California wines, Bob developed a keen interest in wines over the years that included several wine tasting and winemaking classes, being part of a serious wine tasting group for over 25 years, taking many trips through Europe and California that were very wine-centric and ultimately home wine making in his garage with his neighbor Fred. From there Bob and Fred moved on to making wine commercially in 2006.
Fred is a California native who grew up in the Santa Clara Valley and graduated from University of California, Berkeley. Growing up, both parents were gourmands and avid wine enthusiasts who passed along their passions. Upon graduating, Fred spent several years in the advertising/marketing industry in San Francisco. After the dot com bomb in 2001, Fred began volunteering at a small local winery in Alameda and became enamored with winemaking. Looking for space to produce a barrel of wine, Fred convinced neighbor and good friend Bob Rawson to make some wine in Bob’s garage. After a couple of successful vintages under their belt, and a few UC Davis enology classes, Bob and Fred founded Urbano Cellars in 2006.
